Life Support
The Alfred hospital is the largest Trauma Centre in Victoria with the biggest intensive care unit and treats in excess of 10,000 patients each year. Every day people are flown to The Alfred in need of the highest level of care. Every day teams from the Alfred urgently make their way to the very worst medical emergencies. The Alfred is the home of the National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI) which supports trauma hospitals across Australia.
The Life Support Committee at the hospital comprises a number of committed and dynamic young people, many of whom have had their lives touched by trauma. The patron is Jason McCartney, the AFL footballer who was injured in the Bali blast of October 2002 and then went on to make an inspirational return to the football field.
Since the launch in 2003, Life Support has raised over $250,000 all of which has been used to purchase vital, life saving equipment used every day in the trauma and burns units at The Alfred. All this has been achieved by mobilising young professionals’ consciousness to help other people and to support the community by donating directly to the Life Support on-going pledge program, as well as attending the numerous fundraising events organised by the committee over this period.
Life Support was officially launched at The Golden Hour Ball - so named after a term used in trauma to describe the sixty minutes following a trauma when the body works to compensate for whatever has happened to it. That golden hour is a crucial window of opportunity for lifesaving measures to be undertaken.
